Internet Censorship
2005 to Present
The campaign to censor the internet in Australia was reignited in 2005 by Tasmanian
Liberal Senator Guy Barnett. He was soon joined by Senator
Steve Fielding from the Religious Right Family First Party
In March 2006 the Labor Party announced a
policy that, should they win office, they too would seek to censor the internet.
This is being promoted by Labor's Stephen Conroy. At the moment Helen Coonan,
the Minister for Communications, Information Technology
and the Arts, is resisting these calls.
This is an
on-going debate which still has a long way to run.
