Zombie '90: Extreme Pestilence

Directed by Andreas Schnaas / 1991 / Germany / IMDb

ZOMBIE '90: EXTREME PESTILENCE was part of a package of fifteen tapes that were seized by the Australian Customs Service in October 1991. They were forwarded to the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) who found them to be:

"…prohibited pursuant to Regulation 4A(1A)(a)(iii) of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations"

At the same time, Andreas Schnaas's VIOLENT SHIT (1989) was also seized.

Zombie Flesh Eaters

Directed by Lucio Fulci / 1979 / Italy / IMDb

In February 1980, a 2442.40 meter (89:02) 35mm print of ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS was banned in Australia. The reason given was violence, which were described as:
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: High
Purpose: Gratuitous

Pacific Telecasters Australia appealed to the Films Review Board, who in February 1980 confirmed the ban.

In May 1980, a censored 2342.60 meter (85:23) print was awarded an R-rating following the removal a further 2.3 meters (00:05) of footage. The extra cuts were made to remove violence, which was found to be:
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: High
Purpose: Gratuitous

The censorship reduced the violence in the R-rated version to being:
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

This was the print that Pacific Telecasters released theatrically in Australia.

Censored UK print R-rated

In July 1982, Central Video W.A. had an 86m videotape passed with an R-rating. The print was described as the 'British reduced version'.

The R-rating was awarded for violence, which was said to be:
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

This was presumably an import of the censored UK VIPCO pre-cert.

Infinity Video Sales release

In December 1987, Video Excellence had an 84m tape of ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS passed with an R-rating. This censored 82:48 print was released on their Infinity Video Sales label. The cover art came from the U.S. Camp Video release of GOREMET, ZOMBIE CHEF FROM HELL (1986). It looks like Video Excellence sourced a censored version for classification.

The Infinity Video Sales tape was missing over four minutes footage. Details are as follows.

Uncut footage in R-rated ZOMBIETHON (1986)

In September 1988, Virgin Video had a 74m tape called ZOMBIETHON (1986) passed with an R-rating.

This was a compilation of clips from various zombie films, the first sixteen minutes of which was made up of scenes from ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS. It contains most of the footage that was missing from the Infinity Video Sales tape. Only the zombie feast scene and a brief shot of zombies rising from the earth were not included.

Presumably, in 1988 an uncut ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS would have been okay with the Australian censors.

Zombi Holocaust

aka Zombie Holocaust

Directed by Marino Girolami / 1980 / Italy / IMDb

In December 1980, a 2429.20-meter (88:33) print of ZOMBI HOLOCAUST was Refused Registration. The reason given was violence, which was described as being:
Frequency: Frequent

It was finally passed with an R-rating in May 1980. However, this was not before the 2406.15-meter (87:42) 'reconstructed version' was censored by a further 22.10-meters (00:48). The extra cuts were made because of violence, which was said to be:
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: High
Purpose: Gratuitous

The violence in the censored R-rated version was said to be:
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

Hoyts Distribution was the applicant.

Censored Starbase Video release

Following its theatrical run, ZOMBI HOLOCAUST was issued on tape by Starbase Video. This 83:18 (PAL) video was presumably the same as the censored R-rated version.

An initial viewing gives the impression that it is not missing too much footage. However, on closer inspection this is not the case. Many of the cuts are very brief, and do nothing more than tone down the impact.
