Date: 06-1970  /  Rated: AO  /  Length: 15426 feet  /  Time: 171:24  /  Censored by 01:30  /  Reason: violence and indecency  /  Comment: Reduced version

In 1969, more editions of Playboy were banned in Australia than were allowed. Fortunately, the December edition was approved, and featured a long colour pictorial about the latest censor-baiting epic, Harold Robbins' THE ADVENTURERS. The deluxe layout detailed a number of the key sex scenes used to promote the film. The pictorial was also padded with numerous nude shots taken on the set, which never appeared in the final print.

A "Making of" paperback filled with more nude stills was in the bookstores a month before the film screened here in late 1970. Initially I saw it as a 15-year old, filled with expectation, only to find that the footage removed by our censors took out all the stuff displayed in the extensive publicity. What was left was a lavish, camp, over the top extravaganza, which was still well worth a viewing.

At the time, there was a lot of media reports that reconstructed versions of both this, and A.I.P.'s DE SADE (1969) had been submitted to our censors before getting further cuts.

Time of missing footage taken from Paramount's widescreen collection series. Running time: 177:09 (NTSC) 06:01 – 00:01 cut: Close-up of woman's head bleeding after being shot

06:25 to 07:15 - Various views of the farm women being raped and slaughtered by Government soldiers. In Australia, the scene jumped from a young Dax watching as the assaults begin, to him running outside for help. Most details of the attack were removed.

09:09 – 00:01 cut: Close up of Dax's murdered sister with a knife protruding from her neck.

39:18 – 01:16 cut: Unintentionally hilarious outdoor sex scene between Caroline de Coyne and a now adult Dax. In Australia, the scene cut after the first glimpse of their naked embrace (used on the daybill and other advertising), to them lying together afterwards.

63:30 – 00:14 cut approximately: Panning shot of a naked Dax and a naked Amparo Rogo entwined, and falling slowly into bed.

148:43 - Close up of Fat Cat kneeing Marcel Campion in the face. 159:06 – 00:07 cut: Three soldiers attacking two partially stripped women.

Resubmitted by CIC-TAFT Video in a 164-minute version in May 1986, and passed with an M-rating.

Information provided by Shane Harrison.

The Australian censored version played for one week only in Melbourne in early 1971, but floated around during the following couple of years. I saw it at a campus screening in 1974, before finally taping it uncut in 1995 during a rare TV screening on Channel 9. The tape I have (now transferred to DVD) is full of commercials and station promos meaning that I cannot get an accurate timing. The first scene, which was cut at the cinema, occurs before the first commercial break, so I have accurately detailed that starting time. The second scene occurs after three commercial breaks, so and after taking those out,  I only have an approximation of the scene's starting time.

Two scenes suffered cuts for the Australian SOA release.

10:30 – 00:20 approx. cut: A steamy shower scene between Giulio and Laetitia was cut to remove close-ups of Giulio washing soapsuds off Laetitia's nude body.

57:00 approx. - 00:40 collectively cut: Professor Lindmark spies on the young couple making love in the distance through some bushes. Various views were deleted, though nothing cut in total giving an even play for the remaining footage. While one could not detect obvious jump cuts, as soon as a view got interesting, the camera cut back to the voyeur with some audio popping on the soundtrack signalling our censors had been at work. In watching the scene uncut, it speaks volumes to how sad our censorship was at the time. These were very discreet views of a happy, loving couple enjoying themselves.
