The Magus

Directed by Guy Green / 1968 / UK / IMDb

Original theatrical release was censored for a 'Suitable only for Adults' rating.

Information provided by Shane Harrison.
In the 1960s, the novel, THE MAGUS by John Fowles, was a very popular read. The 1968 film version was released in early 1970 in Australia. The censor chopped at two sequences before giving it a "Suitable Only For Adults" rating.

65:27 - 01:28 cut: Michael Caine and Anna Karina making love. The scene intercuts between them having sex in a bedroom and by a lake bed. It is very coy by today standards.

109:41 - 00:48 cut: Footage from a homemade blue movie featuring Candice Bergen's character. The cut made the scene far more suggestive than it actually was. Candice Bergen gets down on her knees and undoes the stud's belt. She looks up to the camera from kneeling position and suddenly the censor's cut takes us back to the film's audience. It appeared as if she performed oral sex. This could not have been further from the truth. In the deleted footage, she just starts kissing him, leading into the sex, which is very tame. Apart from the bare breast of Bergen's stand-in, the scene shows little more than what you would get in a soap opera.

Resubmitted and passed with an M-rating in February 1984.

01:02 Marianna Hill being chased by Robert Forster around a bedroom while both are naked. Includes flashes of frontal nudity of both sexes.
Through laughter they utter the words "fuck" "shit" and possibly the "C-bomb" but my writing is difficult to decipher.

Medium Cool
Review by Rod Bishop
Cinema Papers issue 6, 16 February, 1970

In fairness to the TIME critic who described MEDIUM COOL as 'dynamite, the demonstration scenes have been censored into insignificance in Australia. In our version only two demonstrations, including one very minor 10 second sequence of teargas are shown. Naturally the dialogue and love scenes are butchered making MEDIUM COOL's script even harder to understand.

The cut from Haskell Wexler’s MEDIUM COOL was similarly enjoyable. It involved an amusing bedroom romp between a naked man and his girl ending in some brief fucking.

"Jesus", she shrieks.
"You bastard ., . prick . . . son of a bitch."

Midnight Cowboy

Directed by John Schlesinger / 1969 / USA / IMDb

Original theatrical release was censored for a 'Suitable only for Adults' rating.

Censored footage.

The enema flashback takes place when he and his girlfriend are being raped. Quite a few edits were taken out from this sequence, and played in Chips reel as quick cuts. The scene was very difficult to follow at the cinema and its edits were quick cuts but laundered from right through the scene.

The R-rating was introduced in November 1971. MIDNIGHT COWBOY was one of a number of films that were eventually resubmitted and passed uncut with the new rating. It was reclassified in September 1973, and rereleased theatrically.
