Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

Directed by Clive Donner / 1968 / UK / IMDb

Original theatrical release was censored for a 'Suitable only for Adults' rating.

Information provided by Shane Harrison
HERE WE GO ROUND THE MULBERRY BUSH was filmed in two versions. A scene near the end shows the two main characters skinny-dipping, followed by a naked love scene on the riverbank. The version that played Britain had the swim reduced to a couple of flashes and the love scene played clothed.

Australia got the export nude release with the long version of the swim and the love scene played naked. Three cuts were taken from this sequence for the 1968 Australian release.

Times come from the British BFI DVD release.
80:08 - 00:05 cut: Judy
Geeson removing her top with her breasts shown in close up.

82:27 – 00:29 cut: Nude love sequence on the riverbank shot from waist up. Film resumes when the dog interrupts the tryst.

83:10 – 00:13 cut: Further footage of the naked love scene before the dog interrupts them again.

I am not aware of any dialogue cuts even though the British X-rated release cut other scenes for risqué humour.

The 1970s TV screenings of HERE WE GO ROUND THE MULBERRY BUSH were of the Australian cinema version. It first screened on Channel 10 in late 1973 and then became a staple of Channel 9 midnight to dawn TV. I had a copy on the early Phillips home video 3/4" VCR that predates VHS and Betamax!

On Christmas Eve 1988, it screened on (I think) Channel 10. This is the last time it was shown on TV here as far as I'm aware. Up until that point, it had not been on TV since we had VHS in the late 1970s, so I taped it for a format upgrade. The print was amazing. I have transferred it to DVD. The 1988 screening was the Australian cinema version with the cuts glued back in! You can see the glue and join marks on freeze frame. How this happened is beyond me. Someone had the edits and put them back in to a cut Australian print. How, why, where is a HUGE mystery for me.

Her Private Hell

Directed by Norman J. Warren / 1968 / UK / IMDb

Original theatrical release was censored for a 'Suitable only for Adults' rating. The Censorship Board did not begin to report what films they had classified, cut, or banned until May 1970. HER PRIVATE HELL does not appear in their post May 1970 listings. We therefore assume it was classified prior to this date.

Information provided by Shane Harrison.

HER PRIVATE HELL was released in two different versions.

In the British one, Lucia Modunio's nudity was filmed with her back to the camera, Jeanette Wild writhing topless on the floor during a party scene was completely removed, and a less daring take of her walking to her bed for the film's central sex scene was used.

In the American release, alternate takes reveal Modunio's breasts, Wild's pubic hair as she climbs into bed for the main sex scene, and the party scene was left uncut.

The American print runs shorter than the British release as around 6-minutes of non-sex footage was removed to tighten the flow. The British print is currently available on DVD from BFI Flipside, while the American one was once available on VHS through Something Weird Video (76:03 NTSC).

In Australia, we got the full strength American version, however cuts were made to these sequences. Times refer to the BFI Flipside (BFI) and Something Weird Video (SWV) releases.

The opening credits play with static views of two naked bodies coupling in the background. I don't remember the credit scene being of any interest at all back then, but looking at it now, some of the shots are far stronger than what was removed from the central sex scene. I think it's a pretty good guess that some of the opening credits scene was cut.

48:31 (BFI) or 43:02 (SWV) – 00:21 cut: Jeanette Wild drops her cover as she climbs into bed revealing a shadowy full frontal.

48:56 (BFI or 43:57 (SWV) – 00:45 cut: Montage of lovemaking.

56:25 (BFI) or 51:02 (SWV) - The party scene was edited so that Jeanette Wild strips only to her bra and panties. 13-seconds of her removing her bra and dancing topless and 15-seconds of her rolling around on the floor were removed. Jazz music plays throughout. I did not notice any jump cuts in the sound, so I assume more footage was removed than just the 28-seconds of her topless, so as to establish seamless continuity.

Interestingly, the poster was also censored for its Australian release. This received some press at the time. A white triangle was been painted over Jeanette Wild's side breast. The shot has no nipple exposure in its original form, so the censoring was surprising for 1971.

How I Learned to Love Women

Directed by Luciano Salce / 1966 / Italy – France - West Germany / IMDb

Original theatrical release was censored for a 'Suitable only for Adults' rating.

Information provided by Shane Harrison.

This underrated mid-sixties European sex comedy exploded with a delirious Op Art overlay when it played in Australia in 1968, marketed as a sex movie.

There may have been other cuts, but I can confirm that the scene where Anita Ekberg stripped and swam nude in a pool for the Paparazzi was definitely censored as follows.

The scenes are timed from a German DVD.

43:13 - 00:03 cut: Anita Ekberg's body double, nude in the pool.

43:32 - 00:07 cut: A second view of Ekberg's body double.

43:58 - 00:04 cut: A third view of her nude in the pool.
