Penthouse Forum

Published by PH Publications / Australia

PENTHOUSE FORUM is a long-running magazine that has usually received a Category 1 rating from the Classification Board.

The only other issue to run into problems was PENTHOUSE FORUM VOL. 30 NO. 6 (JUNE 2000) of the US edition, which was Refused Classification in July 2000.

In March 2014, PH Publications relaunched an Australian edition of PENTHOUSE FORUM. They were awarded Category 1 ratings for the first two issues, while three and four were initially banned, before being censored.

PENTHOUSE FORUM #4: Banned and censored

On December 12, 2014, PH Publications had an 84-page edition of issue four banned by the Classification Board. The reason given was:

Pubs 1(a)&(b) The publication is classified RC in accordance with the National Classification Code, Publications Table, 1.
(a) as publications that "describe, depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified," and
(b) "describe or depict in a way that is likely to cause offence to a reasonable adult, a person who is, or appears to be, a child under 18 (whether the person is engaged in sexual activity or not)."

An 84-page modified version was passed with a Category 1 rating on December 22, 2014.

PENTHOUSE FORUM #3: Banned and twice censored

In September 2014, an 84-page edition of issue three was banned by the Classification Board. The reason given was:

Pubs 1(a)&(b) The publication is classified RC in accordance with the National Classification Code, Publications Table, 1.
(a) as publications that "describe, depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified," and
(b) "describe or depict in a way that is likely to cause offence to a reasonable adult, a person who is, or appears to be, a child under 18 (whether the person is engaged in sexual activity or not).

An 84-page modified version was passed with a Category 2 rating on October 13, 2014.

This was still too high for the distributor, so they censored it further. They achieved their desired classification on October 29, 2014, when an 84-page modified version was passed with a Category 1 rating.
