Untold Story, The

Dir Herman Yau / 1993 / Hong Kong

The missing footage discussed for this film is not the work of the OFLC!

Part of the true crime series of films that were kicked off by the movie Dr Lamb, this played in Chinese Cinemas in 1993 with an R-rating. Yu Enterprises submitted a print that ran 87mins (35mm) which was the same as the original Hong Kong Category 3 release. The HK censors demanded cuts to the film before it could be released there.

Thanks to Aidan for this extra information.

As your database states, this infamous Hong Kong Category III film was submitted to the OFLC in it's cut theatrical version. The 2 minutes of cuts made to the theatrical version were to a prolonged and sadistic rape/murder scene. If this scene had been complete in the version submitted to the OFLC in 1993 it would likely have been refused classification rather than passed as R18+. The other addition that your database entry needs is that there is an uncut Hong Kong DVD release from City Connection, the only difference between it and the more well known American DVD from Tai Seng is that the Tai Seng version has apparently superior subtitling and some special features. Incidentally in stark contrast to the West where films with the highest classifications are generally ignored by "serious" critics and awards organisations the lead villain in the film (Anthony Wong Chau Sang) received the years Hong Kong Film Award for best actor for his performance.
